Major Championship Mode

This week I hit the road with colleagues from our sister courses for the ultimate US Open road trip from the friendly confines of Tunxis all the way to Shinnecock Hills on Long Island.

Meet the Crew in the Car

A massive trip like this means bringing the home audience along for the ride, but I’m not traveling alone. Here is the rest of our multi-club field, who, in the spirit of “Give and Take,” each gets a day to make our own:

  • Emma Novak (Red Tail Golf Club): Our BU media resident who views golf through a unique lens of design, indie culture, and analytical details.

  • Denise Miles-Eckhart (Shining Rock Golf Club): The undisputed captain of upscale lifestyle, local culture, and sophisticated coastal dining.

  • Samantha Lindstrum (The Golf Club at Oxford Greens): A fellow athlete and shoreline native who brings brilliant logistical strategy and a no-nonsense attitude to the map.

The Full Road Trip Manifest

Let’s be completely honest: Emma’s Monday itinerary is cute, but it’s a total golf intermission. A board game café? Ice cream? It’s a lovely stroll, but by tomorrow morning, the competitive engine needs to be turned over. When it’s my day to call the shots, we don't slow down—we accelerate.

We're going to cross state lines into New York, and get our minds completely locked into major championship mode before we even think about checking into our Hamptons rental.

Our first stop of the morning is a mandatory baseline check at ZSTRICT at Chelsea Piers in Stamford. If you haven't hit on their simulators, the swing plate tech is incredibly realistic—simulating actual lies, bunkers, and rough. I am not about to let our foursome go a whole week without swinging a club.

But right before we lace up, we are fueling up at Juicy, the performance juice and espresso bar located right inside the complex. I’m making everyone grab a nutrient-dense, crafted smoothie or a double shot of espresso. If we're going to simulate a major championship environment, we need to be physically optimized.

I'm going to dial up a classic championship course layout on the simulator, and I fully expect the internal leaderboard for our road trip to get intensely competitive right out of the gate. Samantha’s ball-striking has been looking better, and I've seen Emma push people out of the way to get to cake.

From there, we are pushing inland to the PGA TOUR Superstore in White Plains. Look, you can never have enough fresh gloves, premium balls, or apparel upgrades when you're heading to a major. I anticipate losing Denise in the apparel racks for a solid forty-five minutes, while I'll be busy testing out some new equipment releases in the hitting bays.

To cap off the ultimate golf road trip day, I’m taking us on a detour past the historic gates of Winged Foot Golf Club. Just standing outside a venue with that kind of deep championship lineage gives you absolute chills. It’s going to be the perfect high-octane prelude to what we're going to witness at Shinnecock.

By nightfall, we will hit the road east to officially check into our Hamptons rental. The golf gear will be secured, the swings will be warmed up, and the trip will officially be in high gear. Tomorrow, Denise takes over the itinerary—which means I'll probably need to swap my golf spikes for something a bit more fashionable.
