Every Dog Should Have Their Day

Quick, time-sensitive PSA before I get into the fun stuff: Registration for Dog Days of Summer closes August 27. That's it. That's the whole deadline. If you've been meaning to sign up and just haven't gotten around to it, this is your actual last chance — not a "still plenty of time" last chance, a real one.
Now, the fun stuff. Full disclosure: by the time the tournament itself tees off on August 30, I'll already be back at Elon. Which is annoying, because this is exactly the kind of event I'd normally build my whole week around.
It's also, if I'm honest with myself, probably for the best. Because if I stayed for this one, I would not be coming home with just a good scorecard. I would be coming home with a dog. A dog that would then need to somehow live with me in a dorm room, which — I checked — is not a thing Elon allows, no matter how good my argument is.
What You're Actually Signing Up For
Dog Days of Summer is a golf tournament in the way that a wedding is technically a legal proceeding — true, but not really the point. Tunxis hosts the event to raise money for DogStar Rescue, and the shelter brings some of their dogs out to the course, both to raise awareness and, ideally, to get a few of them adopted on the spot. So you're not just playing golf for a good cause. You're playing golf with the very real possibility that a rescue dog is going to watch you shank one into the rough and judge you for it. I find that weirdly motivating.
If you've been to any of Tunxis's signature events, you know we don't do things halfway, and this is no exception — real golf, real prizes, and a genuine shot at doing something good for a shelter that needs it.
Meanwhile, I Have My Own Season Starting
Here's the other reason I'm making peace with missing this one: it's basically time for me to stop playing scrambles and start playing golf that actually counts again. My own season kicks off next month, and if the pros can spend their August grinding into the FedEx Cup Playoffs, I can spend mine getting serious again too. There's something almost fitting about it — while I'm packing up for competitive season, Tunxis is throwing one more purely-for-fun event before things get more serious around here too, in a different way.
So consider this my formal handoff. I can't be there, but someone needs to go adopt the dog I'm not allowed to — and you've got until August 27 to make sure that someone is you.
