The Links Laboratory: How the Pros Are Hitting the Reset Button This Week

Next week, the golf world descends on Royal Birkdale for the Open Championship. It is the ultimate test of links golf. But if you are a total golf nerd like me, the most fascinating tournament of the year is actually happening this week at the Scottish Open.

This week isn't just a tournament; it's a laboratory.

Where American target golf goes to die.

You are watching the best players in the world completely strip down their games and rebuild them on the fly. American target golf—where you fly the ball high and stop it on a dime—is entirely useless over there. To prepare for Birkdale, the pros have to spend this week aggressively retraining their brains and their bags to survive the coastal winds and the rock-hard fescue.

As a player who obsesses over course management, I love watching this transition. If you want to know what the pros are actually doing this week to warm up for the final Major of the year, here are the three biggest changes happening on the practice tee right now:

  • Stowing the Lob Wedge: Over here, we use 60-degree wedges with a lot of "bounce" to glide through the soft turf. On a Scottish links course, that same wedge will bounce off the firm dirt and send the ball blading over the green. Watch the pros swap their high-lofted wedges for low-bounce options, or ditch them entirely around the greens in favor of putting from 40 yards out.

  • The 2-Iron Resurrection: You will see a mass exodus of 5-woods and 7-woods this week. When the wind is blowing 30 mph off the coast, a high-flying wood is a massive liability. Players are swapping them out for heavy, low-lofted driving irons specifically designed to hit piercing "stingers" that stay under the wind.

  • Embracing the Bad Bounce: This is the hardest adjustment, and it's purely mental. You can hit a mathematically perfect golf shot on a links course, catch the wrong side of a hidden slope, and end up in a pot bunker. The players who use this week to accept that chaos—rather than fighting it—are the ones who will actually contend at Birkdale next week.

Let’s Talk Strategy

If you were teeing it up in Scotland tomorrow, what is the one club you would instantly take out of your bag, and what are you replacing it with? Drop your equipment swaps in the comments below! 👇

WANT TO WORK ON YOUR OWN STINGER?

You don't need a coastal gale to justify practicing your low-flighted punch shots. Grab a bucket, pick a target, and see if you can keep your ball flight under the tree line.

The rain is officially gone and our fairways are drying out fast. Come test your own course management on White or Green this weekend. Let's go low!

SKIP THE RANGE, KEEP THE CAFFEINE

If you are skipping the practice tee but still want to watch the morning broadcasts, come grab an iced flat white or a cold draft at the Tavern and argue about swing mechanics with the rest of us.
